Like many school districts, RPS has had to make difficult budget cuts in recent years that have impacted student services, reduced staff, and prompted potential school closures. On Nov. 5, voters will consider an operating levy increase to address these challenges. Learn more: www.RochesterSchools.org/referendum

Aidan Steele and Ivan Mamaril did a great job of representing John Marshall, as well as the eleven state region, in the national E-cybermission final this past week in Washington DC. The week was filled with workshops, networking and presentations. Aidan and Ivan, team BasilLab, explained their research project to not only lawmakers and STEM professionals in poster talks and PowerPoints, but also in a live stream across the nation. I mean.... How many 15 year olds get to drive a $100,000 remote vehicle?

Tomorrow, JM's e-Cybermission team, BasilLab, will be competing in Washington DC. On Thursday (6/27) voting for the People's Choice Award will open from 12:30-3:30 pm central time. I know that Aidan Steele and Rick-Ivan Mamaril would appreciate your votes. If you would like to participate in the voting, here is the link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfPhLpEwPFDlP7vbqeklLJtCGEY_tU84AU7RiWwB4gqqtv0lw/closedform So far their team won State and Regional and are now competing at nationals. The BasilLab project focused on Minnesota's drought conditions from last year. It looked at the best way to conserve water while maintaining the health of the plants. It compared different watering methods, including the use of a water monitoring system, programmed using Raspberry Pi, along with the use of hydrogels. Thank you everyone for supporting Aidan and Ivan!

According to the National Museum of African American History and Culture, it wasn't until two years after President Lincoln emancipated ensalved Africans in America that Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, TX on June 19, 1865, with the news of freedom. More than 250,000 enslaved Black people in the state learned of their freedom that day. This day became known as #Juneteenth, a federal, and now Minnesota state holiday.
